Though all the people mentioned in our class' assignments are important figures from the Renaissance, Shakespeare and John Gutenberg affect modern-day society most directly. Shakespeare was an imaginative poet and playwright during the time of the Renaissance, and the works of the "Bard" are still studied today. Shakespeare contributed over 2000 words and phrases to the English language. Shakespeare created many words that we use today in our daily lives. Without the poet's coinage, the English language would be quite limited. Shakespeare, the master of neologism, was quite a maverick among the literary establishment. Since the Renaissance, anglophones have been "following Shakespeare's lead" and creating novel words for new changes. After centuries of innovation and technological advances, words are inspired just the same. In this day and age, there are words apt to any situation, consistent with precise connotations and subtleties. Aside from Shakespeare’s coinage, his plays include controversial story lines and deep insight into human psychology. Ever since this literary revolution, authors have created protagonists embroiled in complex story lines. Therefore, Shakespeare's contributions directly affect us today.
John Gutenberg's contribution is often overlooked, though his invention affects us today. Gutenberg invented the printing press, which caused quick and efficient printing. The invention of mechanical movable type directly triggered the printing revolution, aka the mass production of books. Since Gutenberg's time, we have progressed in accelerating the printing process. All printing advances help our generation spread knowledge through the use of books. Today, Shakespearean plays and textbooks alike are printed efficiently in bulk, thanks to none other than John Gutenberg.
