Ronit Langer- Renaissance Personages, Leonardo da Vinci and Christopher Columbus

Leonardo da Vinci is considered a paradigm of a Renaissance man because he was so talented in so many areas. He was a talented painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, botanist, and writer. During the Renaissance having many talents was important. He was not only talented but a good person, as he was generous and curious. He helped bring beauty and knowledge into the world through his work. He created beautiful works of art, such as the Mona Lisa. He also used his art to display his knowledge of the human body, such as in his work of the Vitruvian Man, and used his art to express his religion, such as in his painting The Last Supper.

Another essential Renaissance man is Christopher Columbus. Columbus knew that there was a better way to get to India, and he was determined to find that way. He went to many different countries until finally Spain agreed to finance his trip. But, after weeks of sailing across the Atlantic, he found something greater than a new route: he found a new world. Once Christopher Columbus opened up the doors of the New World, he opened up the door to a new era. All Renaissance men now had a whole other continent to allow their ideas to spread and flourish. Columbus allowed for the Renaissance to be multi-continental.

Jenny Rosen- Renaissance Personages, William Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth

The two most important people of the Renaissance era were William Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth I. Shakespeare was very influential to modern English. Shakespeare created new words to be used in his plays, but we still use those words today. Some of those words include alligator, carriage and amazement. Shakespeare wrote many plays in his lifetime and these plays are still being read today. They are taught in schools today not only because they are written beautifully, but also because they show us all the ways humans behave. Shakespeare not only was influential in the Renaissance era, but is also influential in our lives today.

Queen Elizabeth I was also a highly influential and important person of the Renaissance.. She was the Queen of England during Shakespeare’s time and lived in the “golden age of progress”. During her reign, the parliament, church, and crown worked in perfect balance. This was previously unheard of, and it was a phenomenal accomplishment of the Queen. Queen Elizabeth established the English Church as something important. It became more of a central place in England. It was this establishment that shaped the national identity. Everyone participated in the Church and became a part of the nation instead of being segregated. The Church was so influential to that time that it even remains in place today. These two people,
Queen Elizabeth I and William Shakespeare contributed to more than just the Renaissance era, but also to our times today.
